We are open - safety is our top priority!
Teeth that are chipped, misaligned or discolored can adversely affect your self-confidence and self-esteem. If your teeth aren’t the beautifully even, white that you’d like them to be, then veneers may be able to provide you with the smile and the self-confidence that you’d like. Veneers can improve the aesthetic appeal of teeth that are healthy but have minor flaws in size, shape, color or alignment. If you’re interested in veneers, then call our office and we’ll be happy to answer all of your questions or provide you with an appointment.
What’s Meant By Dental Veneers?
Veneers are very thin layers of dental porcelain that look and function the same as your natural tooth enamel. They adhere to your natural teeth and enhance their appearance; they’re an excellent fix for teeth that are healthy and structurally sound, but lack aesthetic appeal.
- Size and shape: One or more chipped teeth can adversely impact your self-confidence and make you feel less than pulled together. If you’re going to a job interview or a life event like a wedding, this is especially important. With veneers, only you and your dentist will know that you’ve enhanced the aesthetic appeal of your teeth. They’re permanently installed, so you needn’t worry about slipping or discoloration. If you think your teeth are too long or too short or too square or too round, then the porcelain veneer procedure can fix those problems.
- Tooth Color: Many lifestyle habits can cause your teeth to become dull and discolored as you age. Drinking coffee, tea, colas or red wine can darken your teeth, and smoking can cause stains that no amount of whitening products can remove. Veneers, however, will place a thin layer of new enamel on your teeth so that the dullness, stains, and discoloration are hidden and you’ll have a beautifully white, even smile once again. Veneers can match the color of your natural teeth or you can have them lighter, it’s up to you.
- Alignment and spacing: If you have small gaps in your teeth but don’t want to wear braces, then veneers can help you achieve the even teeth you want without the cost and inconvenience of wearing braces.
If you think veneers would be a good fit for you, then call our East Detroit office and we’ll be glad to schedule a consultation. During your initial visit, your dentist will assess your goals and preferences and determine whether veneers are a good solution for you. If not, then we’ll make other recommendations, so that you can achieve the beautiful smile that you want.
If you and your dentist determine that veneers are a good fit for you, then the first step of the procedure is to make a mold of your teeth so that your veneers fit correctly. We may have to remove up to 1mm of enamel to accommodate the veneers, but it’s a painless process. Once we install your veneers, they’ll stay in place and won’t stain, and they’ll feel as natural as your own teeth. Call our office for more information or to schedule a consultation.
Some of our patients are also concerned about the porcelain veneers cost. The cost of your porcelain veneers procedure will be unique to you, but we’ll provide you with an estimate of your total porcelain veneers cost during your initial consultation. Factors that will influence your final cost include the number of teeth to receive the veneers, any additional work that you need, any insurance benefits that you have, and the brand of veneers that you select.
Is There a Difference Between a Veneer and a Crown?
Although porcelain veneers and porcelain crowns are made from the same material, their functions are different. Crowns cover the entire tooth and provide structural stability for the teeth. They can be used for teeth that have significant damage, whether due to decay or trauma, and they can occasionally need to be replaced. Usually, crowns require removal of at least 2mm of tooth enamel, and they’re frequently used for back teeth because of their additional structural support.
Veneers are used strictly for aesthetic purposes and are applied only to the fronts of the teeth. Veneers can be damaged by biting into hard surfaces, such as candy apples or ice, so those who have veneers on their front teeth should exercise caution when biting.
Do Veneers Last for a Long Time or Are They Temporary?
Unless damaged because of trauma, your veneers should last for decades if you use good oral hygiene practices and properly maintain them. It’s important to use your teeth only for their intended purpose, which doesn’t include opening bags or bottles or any other items.
Are Lumineers® Higher Quality Than Normal Veneers?
Lumineers are a name brand of porcelain veneers that are very thin, so they require little to no reduction in the enamel on your teeth. They’re very durable — many last for decades — and they’re very translucent, so they look just like your natural teeth.
Do Veneers Need Special Upkeep?
Veneers porcelain requires only the good oral hygiene practices that you use for your natural teeth. Brushing and flossing and periodic dental checkups will keep your porcelain teeth looking new for decades, so call our office if you have more questions or want to schedule an appointment.
