What You Need to Know about Dental Implants

What You Need to Know about Dental Implants

If you’ve lost a tooth due to injury or decay, you have a few tooth replacement options, such as bridges, dentures, or dental implants. See why dentists often recommend a dental implant over all other treatments.

Basics and Benefits of Dental Implants

A dental implant is a tooth replacement option when you’re missing a natural tooth. It is surgically embedded into the jawbone to act as the root of a tooth and provide a mount for artificial replacement teeth. Dental implants are often preferred over both bridges and dentures because they offer the following advantages:

  • More stability
  • Greater comfort
  • Fully restores ability to talk and eat
  • Improves facial appearance
  • No risk of slippage during wear
  • Longer-lasting

Placing Dental Implants

Today, there are a few different ways that dentists place these tooth restorations. Each patient’s treatment depends on his or her dental needs and personal preferences. In more complex cases, the entire dental implant process can require a few different procedures over several months. In simpler cases, patients can choose same day dental implants that offer maximum convenience and immediate results. If you’re not eligible for same day dental implants, take a look at the longer placement procedure:

  1. The dentist surgically inserts an implant into the jawbone and then waits around three to six months for it to fully fuse to the bone.
  2. Once it has bonded to the bone, the dentist attaches an extension and then waits a few more months for the surrounding gum tissue to heal.
  3. After it has healed, a crown is attached to the implant’s extension and you’re left with a full smile.

Dental Implant Costs

While dental implants usually cost more than other tooth restoration options, the stability, beauty, and comfort they offer make the higher dental implant costs more than worth it. If dental implant costs are a major concern, see if your dentist accepts insurance or a discount dental plan like Smile Alliance Club.
