Common Questions about Full and Partial Dentures

If you’ve lost your natural teeth, dentures can restore your confidence and your ability to speak and eat correctly. With today’s dental technology, both full dentures and partial dentures are cost-effective and natural looking. To get started, you’ll need to make an appointment with your regular dentist or a specially trained dentures dentist called a prosthodontist. If your needs are complex, a prosthodontist will be able to help you decide on the best treatment option. You probably have many questions about dentures; here are answers to a few of the most common.

What is the Average Cost of Dentures?

Fees associated with dentures vary widely based on location and the complexity of required treatments. The best way to learn about the cost of dentures is to consult a dentures dentist, or prosthodontist. Your local dental society may be able to help you find low-cost resources.

What Types of Dentures are Available?

Full dentures replace all of the teeth in your mouth. They rest against the gum tissue that covers your jawbone. Partial dentures replace only some of your teeth; they are usually designed to attach to natural teeth that are still in your mouth. Dental implants may be used to help stabilize both types of dentures.

How Do I Care for My Dentures?

Caring for dentures isn’t as complicated as you may think. Here are the basics:

  • Brush dentures daily with a non-abrasive soap or denture cleaning paste. Do not use regular toothpaste as it may damage dentures.
  • Dentures are made of plastic and can’t be whitened. Regular brushing and soaking with denture stain removal products can keep them looking their best.
  • You may sleep in your dentures, but it’s best to take them out at night to allow your gums to rest.
  • If your dentures break or become damaged, don’t try to fix them yourself. Take them to your dentures dentist, or prosthodontist, as soon as possible.
  • You’ll be able to eat normally with dentures after you become accustomed to them. Start out with soft foods and gradually add in different textures. If your dentures slip while you’re eating, try using denture adhesive.
  • Like eating, speaking with dentures takes practice. Reading aloud in private can help.
